Student Days

Vom 28.04-05.05 war Tartu fest in Studentenhand. Die Studententage haben Tradition und so wurde der estnische Frühling mit Freude begrüßt. Die ganze Woche über gab es verteilt in der Stadt Aktionen zu Kultur, Sport, Spiel und Spaß. Die ganze Woche über fielen Vorlesungen und Univeranstaltungen leider aus, die Dozenten haben wohl aus Erfahrung gelernt, dass diese in der Studentenwoche eh nicht so viel Sinn haben…

During 28.04-05.05 Tartu was occupied by the students. The student days once a term have a great tradition and we finally celebrated spring arrival in Estonia. The whole week was filled with culture, sportive and fun activities across the town. Obviously, there was no point of holding lectures, so most of the university classes paused for a week.

Am Sonntag gab es am Ufer des Emajõgi gleich mehrere Zuschauermagnete: Zuerst wurde der Flugmaschinen Kontest ausgetragen: Von einem Podium am Ufer stürzten sich Studenten mit selbstgebauten Flugvehikeln in Richtung Fluss. Die Show um den Sprung herum war dabei oft größer und unterhaltsamer als die Flugmaschinen flugfähig. Weiter ging es am Nachmittag mit dem traditionellen Bootrennen auf dem Fluss. Auch hier waren Kostüme und Bootkonstruktionen wichtiger als die Zeit: Es gab eine riesige Quitscheente, ein Boot mit Tieren und sogar eine Badewanne im Wasser.

Several events drew us to the banks of Emajõgi on Sunday. First, the flying machine contest took place. Students in costumes jumped with their self-build flying vehicles from a stage into the river. The performance and costumes were, most of the time, more exciting than the jump itself. The programme continued with the traditional boat race. Again, costumes and self-build boats were more important than reaching the finish line first. This way, we saw a boat full of animals, a rubber duck and a bath tub racing on the river. 

Tanz in den Mai wird hier in Estland als Walpurgisnacht gefeiert. Traditionell werden Feuer angezündet und es wird gemütlich beisammengestanden. Am Abend des 30. April gab es in Tartu eine besondere Version der Walpurgisnacht: die Fußgängerbrücke des Emajõgi wurde zur Bühne. Während des Konzerts gab es ein Feuer auf einem Floß in der Mitte des Flusses, dass von einer Drohne (sehr modern und technisch, wie man es von Estland erwartet) entzündet wurde. Die Show endete mit einem Feuerwerk auf der Brücke, die Nacht allerdings noch lange nicht: Alle Studentenverbindungen in Tartu und sämtliche Clubs öffneten Ihre Türen. So tanzten wir auch hoch im Norden Europas in den ersten Mai hinein.

The German tradition of ‚dancing into May’ is celebrated as Valborg in Estonia. Traditionally, people would gather round a fire and have a nice night together. In Tartu, the night is celebrated a bit more special: The pedestrian bridge over the river was turned into a concert stage. During the concert, a fire was lit on a raft in the middle of the river. And because this is progressive Estonia, the fire was started with a drone. The show ended with a firework on the bridge. However, the night had just yet started: Student fraternities and clubs opened their doors for everyone. And this way, we did dance into May all though we were in northern Europe. 

Während ich zuhause wohl eine Pättkestour oder ein Grillen für den 1. Mai geplant hätte, war der Tag in Estland anders – aber genauso schön. Im Rahmen der Studenten Tage gab es eine kostenlose Vorführung zu Sternkonstellationen im historischen Planetarium. Ausnahmsweise war das Wetter auch einmal besser als in der Heimat und wir konnten einen Kaffee auf dem Rathausplatz genießen. Ganz langsam hält der Frühling auch in Estland Einzug – die Bäume sind leider noch nicht grün, aber nun beginnt allmählich das Blühen. 

The first of May would traditionally be celebrated with a “Pättkestour” in my hometown: A biking or hiking tour with beer, snacks and barbeque. The bank holiday in Estonia was different – but nevertheless, as nice as at home. Maybe even better, since for once the weather in Tartu was nicer than in Germany! We enjoyed a free introduction to the stellar constellations in the Tartu observatory and lots of sun in the city centre.

Station vier in der Aktionswoche war eine Wandertour, organisiert von einem internationalen Begegnungszentrum und den Student Days. Mit Autos ging es am Nachmittag zum Mennikunno Moor, wo wir entspannt ein Stückchen wanderten und danach am Lagerfeuer Sandwiches aßen. Bei schönstem spätabendlichen Sonnenschein streiften wir auf dem befestigten Holzpfad durch die Natur. Endlich, endlich habe ich es ins Moor geschafft! Estland ist voll davon und die meisten Esten würden eine Wanderung im Moor (oder wahlweise natürlich auch Wald) als festen Teil ihres Lebens ansehen.

Part four of the active week was a hiking tour, organised by an international meeting café and the student days. We started Wednesday afternoon in Tartu, where cars were arranged to get us out of the city and into Mennikunno bog. After a (very relaxed) walk, we enjoyed some sandwiches at the campfire. Finally, I made it to a bog in Estonia – which is, to Estonians, a quite essential part of their life.

Da wir am Dienstag schon unser Wissen über Sterne aufgebessert haben, ergatterten wir noch Tickets für eine ganz besondere Bootsfahrt am Freitag: abends ging es auf einem gemütlichen Holzboot auf Fahrt. Auf dem Emajõgi hatten wir außerhalb der Stadt die beste Sicht auf die Sterne und konnten ein paar der Konstellationen am sternklaren Himmel wiedererkennen. 

Since we learned a lot about the stars on Tuesday, we made sure to join the stargazing trip Fridays night. On a wooden boat we gilded on the river towards the edge of Tartu. Equipped with blankets and tea, we could see all the stars of the cloudless sky. All though the commentary was in Estonian, we managed to understand at least a few snippets – and nevertheless enjoyed a peaceful time.

 

Höhepunkt der Woche war das abschließende Songfestival. Endlich konnten wir auch Teil dieser estnischen Tradition sein. Zur Vorbereitung auf das Singen im Pulk habe ich eine Liederliste erstellt, die ihr euch gerne auch hier anschauen könnt. Leider gab es nicht für alle Lieder ein Video in guter Qualität, aber ich denke sie vermitteln einen guten Einblick wie es sich ungefähr anhörte.

Highlight of the week was the Song festival, which marked the end of Student days. It was magnificent to finally experience the singing culture part of Estonia. I tried to be as prepared as possible and created a YouTube playlist to practice the songs, find it here!
