Riga & Vilnius zum Zweiten

Um 6 Uhr in der Frühe
(man bedenke an dieser Stelle, dass wir alle Studenten sind)
schleppten wir uns zum Busbahnhof in Tartu um den Schlaf im Bus nach
Riga weiter fortzusetzen. Vilnius und Riga im Sommerwetter noch
einmal zu besuchen hat sich eher spontan ergeben. Die Städte zum
zweiten Mal zu sehen war super entspannt und ich konnte mich als
Touristenführerin für unsere kleine Gruppe nützlich machen. Einmal
angekommen genossen wir die Altstadt Rigas, die bei sonnigem
Juniwetter doch schöner ist als im kalten Februar.
At 6 in the early morning
(please consider at this point, that we are all students) we dragged
ourselves to the coach-station in Tartu to continue our sleep in the
bus to Riga. It was a rather spontaneous idea to visit Vilnius and
Riga in the summer weather again. Seeing the cities for a second time
was super relaxed and I could advise our small travel group as a
tour-guide. Once arrived we enjoyed the oldtown of Riga, which is
much nicer in sunny June as in cold February.
Dieses mal gab es auch
endliche eine Stadtrundführung. Die mit dem Fokus auf Kultur
ausgelegte Tour war gefüllt mit kleinen Anekdoten und Legenden um
Persönlichkeiten und Bevölkerung der Stadt, so war das Zuhören in
den 2,5 Stunden ein Vergnügen. So erfuhren wir viel über das Art
Nouveau Viertel und seine manchmal sehr eigensinnigen Architekten.
Finally, I could join a
guided city tour with the focus on culture. It was filled with small
anecdotes and legends about Rigas personalities and population and
the 2,5 hours went by very quickly. We learned a lot about the Art
Nouveau quarter and its sometimes very stubborn architects.

musste natürlich auch wieder sein, eindeutig mein Lieblingsort in
Riga!
A break
at the Skybar had to be on the schedule again, too – definitely my
favourite place in Riga!
Lettisches Abendessen und
Bier gab es im Ala Restaurant. Es wurde ein sehr lustiger Abend, auch
wenn wir immer noch nicht wissen warum manche Schweizer fasziniert
von Holzhäusern sind, was reisen mit Tschechen mit einem macht und
ob ausgedruckte Stadtpläne einen schneller ans Ziel bringen als
Google Maps. Die Küche in allen baltischen Ländern macht der
Deutschen definitiv Konkurrenz: Es ist sehr Kartoffel- und
Fleischlastig – und es gibt Sauerkraut überall.
Latvian dinner and beer at
Ala completed the evening. It turned into a very fun time, all though
we still don't know why some Swiss people are fascinated by wooden
houses, what travelling with Czech people does to you and if printed
maps are quicker to get somewhere as Google maps. The kitchen of the
Baltic countries is definitely competing with the German: There are
lots of potatoes, meat – and Sauerkraut everywhere!
Weiter ging es nach
Vilnius! Einstimmig wurde beschlossen, dass die Atmosphäre der
Altstadt irgendwie einladender ist als Rigas. Bei wunderbar sonnigem
Wetter quälten wir uns die Stufen zum Drei-Kreuze-Berg hoch und
genossen den Ausblick.
On the journey went to
Vilnius! Unanimously we agreed, that the atmosphere in the oldtown is
more inviting compared to Riga. During perfect summer weather we
tortured ourselves up the stairs to the hill of the three crosses and
enjoyed a wonderful view.
Die Stadtrundführung in
Vilnius war ebenfalls lohnenswert, für beide Städte haben wir uns
für kostenlose bzw. auf freiwillige Bezahlung basierende Touren
entschieden und sind nicht enttäuscht worden.
The city tour in Vilnius
was worthwhile, too. For both cities we decided on free walking tours
that are tip-based and we were not disappointed.
Zu Beginn der Tour in
Vilnius stellte sich jeder kurz mit Namen und Herkunftsland vor. Wie
sich herausstellte war mit uns der wohl berühmteste tschechische
Tourist auf der Führung: Ladislav Zibura hat bereits drei Bücher
über seine Reisen veröffentlicht. Das wäre mir natürlich ohne
tschechische Begleitung nicht aufgefallen, aber so hatten wir
zwischen den Stops viele Interessante Gespräche und gingen sogar
gemeinsam nach der Tour zu Mittag essen.
At the beginning of the
tour, everyone had to shortly introduce him/herself. It turned out
that the probably most famous Czech tourist was with us on the tour:
Ladislav Zibura has already published three books about is travels.
Of course I would have never noticed this without Czech company, but
this way we had a lot of interesting topics to talk about in between
the stops of the tour and even went out for lunch all together.
Immer wieder gut in
Vilnius sind Geschichten über den ehemaligen Bürgermeister. Um
dafür zu Sorgen, dass die Fahrradwege nicht zugeparkt werden fuhr er
Beispielsweise mit einem Panzer über ein falsch parkendes Auto
(siehe Video). Den Enthusiasmus für gute Radfahrkonditionen in der
Innenstadt muss man ihm lassen.
Always good for a laugh
are stories about the former mayor of Vilnius. To make sure that the
cycle paths are free he, for example, rolled with a tank over a
illegally parked car (see video). The enthusiasm for making the city
more suitable for bicycles has to be admitted to him.
In Uzupis – der selbst
erklärten Künstlerrepublik gibt es vermutlich jede Woche etwas Neues zu entdecken. Dieses mal war ich sehr begeistert, gegenüber dem
Denkmal von „Jesus dem ersten Backpacker“ Graffiti von Edward von
Lõngus dort zu finden, er
ist sozusagen der estnische Banksy und definitiv der zur Zeit
populärste estnische Streetart Künstler.
You can probably find
something new in Uzupis, the self-founded aritst republic, every
week. This time I was really excited to see graffiti from Edward von
Lounguss across the statue of 'Jesus the first backpacker'. Lõngus
is kind of the Estonian Banksy and definitely the most popular
Estonian street artist at the moment.
